Review: Fields of Fire by Ryan Steck

Publisher’s Description

Waiting to be deployed on a critical mission, elite Marine Raider Matthew Redd stops to help a stranger and wakes up hours later to learn his team was wiped out in an ambush. Unable to remember anything, Redd can’t deny the possibility that he’s somehow responsible for the information leak that led to the massacre. He’s given a deal to avoid a charge of treason, but it means walking away from the Corps and the life he loved.

As he faces his loss, Matty gets a cryptic message from his adoptive father, J. B.: “Trouble’s come knocking. . . . Might need your help.” He points his truck home to rural Montana, only to discover that J. B. is dead and the explanation for his death is far from satisfying. Determined to dig up the truth, Redd uncovers a dark global conspiracy with his hometown at the center and no team at his back—except one he might find among past friends, old enemies, and new allies, if he can figure out who to trust.

Thrilling Reads Book Review

Ryan Steck is well known in the thriller book community as an influencer and book reviewer behind the popular website The Real Book Spy, which is the go-to spot for readers that love thrillers. Now, Ryan Steck has moved to the other side of the book review table by publishing his debut thriller, FIELDS OF FIRE, and he doesn’t disappoint!

FIELDS OF FIRE is the story of an elite Marine Raider, Matthew Redd, who goes home to rural Montana after his adopted father is killed. Redd is unsatisfied with what he’s being told about the murder. He begins his own investigation that leads him to a global conspiracy, only he can stop.

Knowing about Ryan Steck love of military-political thrillers like the Mitch Rapp novels, I was expecting FIELDS OF FIRE to be in that vein, but was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was not only an action-packed military thriller, but interwoven was a suspenseful crime thriller once Redd arrives in Montana.

Ryan Steck does a great job of introducing us to Matthew Redd and his world in the first book of what I hope will become a long-running series. Book two will be out in 2023!

Ryan Steck has reviewed thousands of thrillers over at the Real Book Spy, and he’s also worked as a freelance editor, so he knows the craft, and it shows in this outstanding debut.

I interviewed Ryan for my podcast. He told me that he pitched this book to his agent as Vince Flynn meets C. J. Box, and this is the perfect description of this novel. He encapsulates the isolation and aloneness of rural Montana with the non-stop action of a military thriller wrapped into a intriguing crime thriller. Go get FIELDS OF FIRE, you’ll love it. It’s out now.
