After Johnny Careless, the “fast-moving classic crime novel” (John Sandford), comes the lively next installment in the Jeep Mullane series from veteran screenwriter and Blue Bloods showrunner Kevin Wade.
As a hurricane makes landfall on Long Island’s Gold Coast, Police Chief Jeep Mullane responds to a plea for help at the estate of his longtime friend Jenny Racine, who has been violently assaulted in a home invasion. Jenny was the girl next door growing up, is now a rich and famous entrepreneur, and has always been a compelling, infuriating, and magnetic presence in his life.
Though Jenny is adamant she wants no investigation of the incident, Jeep sets off on a lonely and dangerous path to find out who attacked her. As he makes alarming discoveries, he must pry open the secrets of Jenny’s ex-military ex-husband, a fugitive police captain, officious federal agents, steely blue-blooded women, and two local biker gangs, casting aside his protocol as a police chief to challenge the criminals himself.
Thrilling Reads Book Review
One Good Eye Review: A Fast-Paced Crime Thriller from Kevin Wade
In this One Good Eye review, I’m looking at the second book in Kevin Wade’s Jeep Mullane series, following Johnny Careless. While One Good Eye. I enjoyed it and found it to be a quick, entertaining crime thriller.
At around 230 pages, this is a relatively short novel, and Wade keeps the story moving at a brisk pace. There isn’t a lot of wasted space here. The plot moves quickly, making it an easy book to pick up and keep reading.
The writing is also very polished, which isn’t surprising considering Wade’s remarkable career. Before turning to crime novels, he wrote screenplays for movies including Working Girl and Meet Joe Black and spent fourteen years as a writer, executive producer, and showrunner on Blue Bloods. That experience shows. The dialogue is sharp, the scenes are visual, and the storytelling has an efficient, almost cinematic quality.
The novel once again follows Jeep Mullane, now a police chief on Long Island, as he investigates a case involving someone from his past. The Long Island setting is particularly effective and gives the story a strong sense of place.
I wouldn’t rank One Good Eye among my favorite crime novels of the year, but I had a good time reading it. It’s fast-paced, professionally written, and short enough to finish in just a few sittings.
If you enjoy police procedurals, character-driven mysteries, or the storytelling style of shows like Blue Bloods, One Good Eye is well worth checking out.
